Yes, it's loud, dirty and will suck money out of your pockets faster than a giant Hoover, but visiting the CNE is a Labour Day weekend tradition. In addition to the usual array of tacky carny amusements, there are two great reasons to visit the CNE this year: deep-fried Mars bars and Carnival Diablo's World of Wonders.
Though deep-fried chocolate bars are nearly unknown on this side of the Atlantic, they will be familiar to anyone who's ever passed a drunken evening in Glasgow or Edinburgh - a sickly treat packing enough calories to satisfy even a drugged-up Elvis. Only one concession stand serves them this year: a little booth on your right as you walk toward the Princess Gate, but we predict they'll be a breakout hit.
After all that grease, you may want to avoid the stomach-churning rides and seek out Carnival Diablo's World of Wonders, a charming reproduction of a Victorian freak show. It's the culmination of a lifelong dream for its owner, Scott McClelland, and most items on display came from his grandfather's collection.
